When MSIE 7 first came out I asked if anyone would recommend for or
against it. What is the geek-ish recommendation now that it has been out
a while? MS Update keeps pushing it.

I was prepared to hate it when DH insisted it be installed on my
'puter. I'm still not wild about it but must admit that it makes
opening multiple browsers extremely easy. And I am getting used to
it.

I stick to Firefox because of its add-ons (for programming / ... it is a
must have). But if you do not like it, you may also try Opera ?
If you had Apple OSX, I would recommend Safari in its last version, but
honestly the Windows version is not up to the task, I would say...

Three words: Don't install it. Use IE6, Firefox or Opera.

I personally prefer a browser called maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/)
but use IE7 for downloading MS updates. >> Stay informed about: Any recommendations on MS IE 7 |

IE 7 is just a broken version of Firefox. NO thanks. I have it
installed, but I only use it for those pages that insist on IE.

Exactly Kat, that is the ONLY reason to use it, or ANY flavor of Internet
Exploder. You can tell updater to stop trying to push IE7 on you, both on
the update website and in the update tool on your system if you don't want
to install it.
IE7 _IS_ a little bit better than IE6. I'd accept the "update" but do NOT
use it as your primary browser. I prefer, as do some others here, Fire Fox.
The only times it's shut dowm on me are on sites that insist on Microshaft.

It was IE7 that sent me to Firefox. *G* I'd been resisting the change,
as I was used to IE6. When I downloaded IE7, I hated it so much and KNEW
that Firefox was better from watching Jesse use it for years, that I
switched. Now, I don't know why I waited so long.

I DO use Firefox as my primary browser, and Thunderbird for mail & news.
The ONLY reason I normally use MSIE is because there are those $&%$#$
sites that insist on it, such as work email which uses OWA to log in
from home. FF will work, but at a very basic level - as if there were
IE-only parts in OWA. I also like Firefox portable (from
portableapps.com) on my thumb drive.
I have Opera also, but do not like it as much as FF.
I was just wondering if MSIE 7 is any better (faster, more secure, etc.)
than MSIE 6.
Any thoughts on Windoze Media Player 11 vs. version 10?

Not sure if you've seen the news report (or maybe it's been noted in this
thread and my ISP hasn't delivered it) - but the Opera folk have filed a
complaint with the EU, asking that IE be separated from the Windows product,
*and* that Microsoft be forbidden to include in IE any features not in the
HTML standards.
And yes, I *do* use IE when running Windows, in large part because that's
what our sponsor agencies use. When not using a MickeySoft operating
system, I'm quite happy to be released from that restriction.
(Then there's always Vista, which I consider to be in most ways a solution
desperately in search of a problem...)

There are two extensions for Firefox that you might want to try: "IE
Tab", which will display a tab's contents using the IE rendering engine
(if I'm recalling the description correctly), and "Go to WindizUpdate",
which links to a website that gives you the Windoze updates without
having to use IE.
I've only been using the two for a month or so, but I love that I don't
need IE at all anymore. (Now, if only I could get my Flash plug-in
working properly at the office, I'd be completely happy.......Stupid
paranoid computer department!)

Is it stupid to be paranoid if They really are Out To Get you?
(Maybe I've been reading one too many computer security updates. It's
usually nice when an industry is booming... not so nice when the industry
in question is identity theft. Or credit card theft. Or phishing. Or
spam. Or malware. Or...)
Totally off topic: Ok. If any of you lost your pet -- dog or cat -- would
you remember to take a walk/drive around your local area and examine signs
taped to streetlights? Looking for a "found pet" sign with a familiar
description? Or is there some other community venue people post 'found
pet' signs these days?
In Silicon Valley, there's probably a WWW site. But I doubt that is the
case in my local area. I've met some of my neighbors who say they don't
even read for fun! At all!
Hmmm. Maybe I need to figure out how to post the sign in Spanish. But
animal control has a bilingual phone operator -- a non-English-reading
owner could find out about the dog I found by calling there...
Hmmm.

Did you take the dog to someone to see if it has been chipped? Not that
we ever sent in our registration for the cats, but the ASPCA does it as
a matter of course, now, so the dog MIGHT be chipped.
Maybe take his/her picture, and put up new signs with the picture?

I might. But, hey, if you're missing a small brown dog and see a "found
small brown dog" sign... I'd call, just on the off chance, photo or no.
I originally found two small brown dogs. One of them was chipped. The
other is contentedly snoozing in a crate on my living room floor. (He's
not properly housetrained. So he's in the crate when he's inside.) Five
days lost, and not one phone call from an owner!
If I lost my dog, I'd be going up the wall.

Don't shoot the messenger. In many organizations (more likely in larger
ones) the determination of whether to prohibit certain software from
company-owned computers can be made by not only the IT staff.
The IT staff may not want a program on machines it must support (e.g.,
"there is no corporate need for this software," or "this software does not
provide sufficient benefit to justify the overhead it would require (testing
against corporate programs, help desk support when it breaks, ensuring that
security updates are installed, etc.)".
The Information Security department (aka INFOSEC) may also prohibit it as an
unacceptable security risk; in this case the IT staff has no choice, and
must block its installation (perhaps while negotiating with INFOSEC).
With no information about your employer I can't offer anything more than a
general comment, but recall that what may be convenient for you may cause
problems elsewhere. (Or, of course, it may be that someone made a policy
prohibiting a certain program from being installed and doesn't want to be
bothered by facts that suggest that it was a stupid idea.)
ObDisclosure: I work with, and occasionally establish policies for, both IT
and INFOSEC for a large organization.
