Hello, a.b.k-v,
My name is Darrell Loudermilk, some of you may remember me. I used to
read and post to this newsgroup around five years ago or so. Some of
you may also remember Wendy Wilson, who read and posted to a.b.k-v
about that same time. We were both AOLers, my screen name was
"FIXmyCAT' and hers was 'WheatiesBOC," as I remember it.

Before I get to my request for help, I'll provide a little "catch up"
for those of you who do remember us... I lived in Virginia and Wendy
lived on Long Island and we were both married with kids when we each
started posting here. After each of our marriages ended, Wendy and I
became close e-friends, and we ended up meeting in person, which lead
to a relationship. We've lived together here in Virginia for three
years now, and we're finally making it legal next month.

Which leads to the reason for this e-mail... For some time now Wendy
and I have thought that since Vonnegut was the original connection
between us, we'd really like to have something from his work read by
our minister at our wedding. We've combed through some of the books
and searched on the net, and we've not quite found exactly what we're
looking for... so, in desperation, we've decided to come crawling back
to a.b.k-v with the hopes that someone will "do our homework" for us.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? It doesn't have to be romantic
or marriage-oriented, per say... we're a blended family with three
kids between us, so it can be about family or about love in general,
or about anything, really. If a passage or a quote pops to mind that
strikes you as a nice addition to a marriage ceremony, please post a
message or e-mail us at loudermilk.RemoveThis@gmail.com

Thanks!
Darrell

I used "If this isn't nice what is!" as an intro to my speech at my
wedding if that helps....

I do remember when your screen names used to appear here. That is
amazing that you met through this group! Congratulations! I dropped
out of this group for a long time, and in the mean time it seems to
have fallen almost completely apart, but I still check in here every
so often...

If something occurs to me I'll post it... Am I crazy, or do I remember
someone saying that they compiled a searchable list of Vonnegut
subjects in an index; like you can look up KV's views on certain
subjects - like "love" or "marriage" or "family" and be led to quotes
with page numbers etc...

Or maybe I dreamed it...

When I got into abk-v in '96 the group was active enough, but back then
there was Bob's MOTHER NIGHT movie and Kurt was still writing. In the
next millennium, for a while there was an active group in here, but
you'd be hard-pressed to find much about Vonnegut or anything related.
Now, not much is going on with Kurt except primarily unannounced
speaking engagements, and when there's a post in here you can pretty
much count on its being on-topic.

That only strikes a bell with the CONVERSATIONS WITH KURT VONNEGUT book
edited by William Rodney Allen which puts together various interviews
done with Kurt over the decades. At the back is an index, and within it
is an entry under "Vonnegut, Kurt" which is actually an index within an
index. Scan through the entries within that you'll be as close as I've
found to the thing you're describing.

You're probably right; but I still have a vague memory of their being
one on the net somewhere, or maybe someone was working on one, and it
never got done? Oh well. Yes, I was thinking of Conversations With as
being a good source, too. If I get a chance, I'll look in there and
see if I find anything noteworthy under "marriage" or "Love" etc..

That sounds a bit like THE VONNEGUT ENCYCLOPEDIA by Marc Leeds (Greenwood,
1995), though I don't see any of THOSE particular entries in my copy.

Interesting post. Overall, and just going by recollection, it seems that
most of the ideas in KVs books are about as useful to a marriage as green
kryptonite. I can offer my favorite Vonnegut quote, apropos to nothing,
which is

"BEAVER!"
