> (Have you done your two thousand words today?)
Not yet - I'm not quite ready to do the "heavy lifting" of writing the thing
out (and besides, trying that method before has always led to me abandoning
the thing through lack of enthusiasm!)
No, I've hit upon the idea of writing an outline and adding to it as and
when I come up with a useful idea. Hopefully, in time, I'll have a
reasonably lengthy 'outline' that to which I can add the linking bits.
Actually, this was partially inspired by some sage writing advice I received
from someone here in the Village a long time ago - I've tweaked it a little
bit!
So far it's mostly writing down anecdotes I can use - the story is told from
a first person perspective and very much relies on anecdotes and
reminiscences. I had a 'lightbulb' moment when trying to work out how to
introduce the narrator; it came out of listening to a Mark Lawson interview
with Alan Bennett - how do you explain to the reader/viewer things that it
can be reasonably expected that the characters already know. In my case,
how do you let the reader know the name of the narrator when the narrator
already knows it and is narrating in his head (i.e. is not actually talking
to anyone else and so doesn't need to introduce himself by name) This
morning, it hit me, and the thing that hit fits perfectly with the overall
idea of the story, plus I can probably squeeze in a Pet Shop Boys reference
too! (I LIKE Pet Shop Boys...)
In my head, I do have the opening paragraph already written, and I have a
slightly punny name for the narrator. And I have a title. I've had the
title for a good few years.
That's enough of the sausage making for now...
Au Res.,
