Hi,

I realize this is a stupid question, but I never got this straight
reading KK.

Simple enough, there is a person for east, south, west and north in a
deryni ritual.

Now, how do you act as - say - east:
1) speak your invocation facing west (i.e. center of your group)
2) turn your back to the others and face east - turning clockwise? or
counterclockwise?
3) actually stand in the west side of the group - already facing east
4) or something I didn't think of

-
Confused

Well, first, separate in your mind the invocation and the "entity"
invoked. The invoker faces the direction (i.e., when invoking the
Guardian of the East, he/she faces East, in the South, facing South,
etc. And I believe that I remember the order of invocation, which
says that the invoker is traveling deosil(clockwise).

Not stupid questions (the only one I know that is stupid is the one
not asked)

Hth!

It is deosil because it follows wiccan tradition fairly closely.
Being wiccan, I should know:) That was one of the first things that
struck me when I started reading the series way back when.

I like how they scribe the circle three times as well - smoke, water,
sword.

The way I have interpreted it in the book to be would be that there
are 4 people standing in a circle, one on each cardinal point.
Everyone begins by facing east. The person in the east, lights a
candle, says something specific to that patron angel, and then they
all turn to the south and the person in the south lights a candle and
says something. Repeat by all face west, and all face north.

The principal celebrant then binds the circle above and below and
voila, you have a sacred circle.

The way I have always perceived motions is that whenever possible, you
always go clockwise. So to begin, all face east. Person in the east,
turns counter clockwise to light from altar, an continues to turn to
face east moving counter clockwise. You don't move from your
position, but you do tend to turn in place.

Hope that didn't confuse you more.
