I am searching for two children's books I read long ago,
probably around 1968. Both are dimly remembered.

The first was an adventure story about searching for
lost mines. About the only thing I remember was that the mines
were called Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

The second was a spy/adventure story. The plot involved a secret code
deduced by looking up words on certain pages of an encyclopedia or
perhaps the world almanac. The secret message finished "and beware
long shadow". The plot somehow involved heavy water, but I don't
remember much more.

If these descriptions ring any bells for anyone, I'd greatly appreciate
receiving e-mail.

Asking for private emails, usually gets few results. You see, most
people
won't go to the work to do free research for you, if they think that
someone
else has probably done it and already emailed you.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm not asking anyone to do "free research", I'm asking if the descriptions
ring bells in anyone's mind.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I got an answer for this one: it's _Mystery of the Black Diamonds_ by
Phyllis Whitney. Thanks!

Still seeking this one, though.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Jeffrey (and I didn't think you were asking for free research!)

That first one does ring a huge bell--unfortunately not one I can bring up
what the book is. I totally remember those names as relating to mines, but
that's about it. I'm hoping someone else will be able to remember!

I think the point is not that anyone is asking for "free" research, but that
these are discussion groups. People tend to react negatively to requests for
answers to be emailed, because if everyone did so there would be little or
no discussion. Many people consider it bad netiquette to say upfront that
you aren't going to bother to check the newsgroup for responses to your
request. (Note: apparently this is not what you actually meant, since you
have already responded, but it sounded like it. Obviously, there was a
misunderstanding.)

Neither of them rings a bell with me, sorry.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I wondered if it was one of hers. If I'd gotten out of my chair & gone to
look, I could probably have found it--still have all her YA mysteries on my
shelf!
