Except that I'm only 17, so it shouldn't be too impossible.

And I think I've tracked down the book. It was oversized, with a red
and brown cover whose cellophane peeled. It contained fairy tales from
around the world, including (this is all i remember) one called "why the
sea is salt," one starring a boy named Hans, one about Puss in Boots,
one about the Bunyip, one about a group of dancing princesses, and one
about a rooster that turns into a weathervane. Given the Amazon.com
listings and reviews of this book
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0385189494/qid=
1061188480/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/104-0840930-9346305?v=glance&s=books>,
"Best Loved Folktales of the World," by Joanna Cole, from 1982 or 83, I
think that's the one. The list of stories here <http://www.story-
lovers.com/listsfolktalesallnations.html> includes all the ones i
remember, and an Amazon reviewer mentions "the mean spirited half-
chicken who eventually became a weather vane."

The problem is... I have a visual memory, and this must be a new edition
or something, because it's certainly not the cover i remember. Also,
the one i remember had great color illustrations all throughout. Does
ANYBODY have the original hardcover brownish/reddish edition of this
book?

Best-Loved Folktales of the World
Joanna Cole, ed.
Anchor, September 1983 or 82

Anything you could do to help me set eyes on the original cover would be
GREATLY appreciated.

Here's a listing of the various editions; maybe contacting
some sellers of the books will help?

collection of pre-Grimms fairy tales? - Does anyone know if there exists in one book, or in one series, a collection of the fairy tales we associate with the Brothers Grimm, but in their pre-Grimm versions? I'm looking for something by title and author, published within the last, say 40 years...
