Post subject: Marvel solicitations - June
Archived from groups: rec>arts>comics>marvel>xbooks, others (more info?)

Here's the CBR link:-

http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=3419

The more important bits:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #509 - Mike Deodato comes on as regular artist.

AMAZING FANTASY #1 - Fiona Avery and Mark "my god, how many books can
one man do" Brooks bring back Spider-Girl in "a surprising series of
teen-friendly adventures." The solicitation copy isn't exactly
inspiring - do they have a robot churning out generic phrases?

VENOM v CARNAGE #1 - Four-issue mini. Written by Peter Milligan, so
might be decent. Art by Clayton Crain, who I've never heard of.

POWERLESS #1 - Six-issue mini about Marvel characters without their
powers but still being heroes. Sounds a bit ropey. Michael Gaydos on
art, though, so it could be okay. Written by Matt Cherniss and Peter
Johnson, who don't mean anything to me.

SPIDER-MAN/DR OCTOPUS: YEAR ONE #1 - Five-issue mini. Written by Zeb
Wells, art by Kaare Andrews. Reading between the lines, this seems to
actually be a Dr Octopus Year One series. Could be alright.

Several comics are claiming to contain events leading into next month's
AVENGERS #500. The crossover is back, kids. Don't stand too close. The
participating titles are SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN (?!), THOR and IRON MAN.
But, uh, not AVENGERS.

ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #7 - Ellis and Immonen's first issue.

MARY JANE #1 - Ongoing series, out of continuity, about Mary Jane Watson
at school. Sounds like a dreadful idea, but the creative team (Sean
McKeever and Takeshi Miyazawa) are excellent, so you never know.

The SPIDER-MAN/DR OCTOPUS: OUT OF REACH miniseries is collected in
digest form, not as a trade. Looks like Marvel have decided the digest
is the way of the future. Price tag is $5.99, which isn't bad
considering it collects a five-issue mini.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #1 ships two variant editions, including a "Director's
Cut." Because 1993 was such a good year.

NEW X-MEN appears to have dropped the ACADEMY X subtitle.

EXCALIBUR #2 is resolicited, as the title is already running a month
late. NYX is resolicited for the second time and is now running five
months late. WOLVERINE: THE END #4 is resolicited and is also several
months behind. All is not well.

IDENTITY DISC #1 - Five issue miniseries by Robert Rodi and John
Higgins. Seems to be a shameless spoiler attempt at DC's Identity
Crisis miniseries. WTF?

THOR #80 and #81 - Michael Avon Oeming is the new writer.

INVADERS #0 - Which is actually the concluding part of an AVENGERS
storyline, so it's effectively an extra issue of AVENGERS. Cute way to
try and build attention for the series. Marvel are obviously getting
behind it, but I still don't see it working.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #27-28 - Guest art from Eddie Campbell. Well, that's
going to be odd.

WITCHES #1-2 - Yes, the same book that was being talked about two and a
half years ago. But now it's a Marvel Knights title.

MYSTIQUE finally gets its first trade.

UNCANNY X-MEN's sixth trade includes the two Chuck Austen pre-Reload
issues of NEW X-MEN, so at least the Morrison trades won't be dragged
down.

Surprisingly, there's a fourth ELEKTRA trade paperback, even though
Marvel have axed the series.

Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo's FANTASTIC FOUR run gets a hardback
collection, covering issues #60-502. (That's #60-70 and #500-502, if
you're wondering.)

Not a hugely inspiring month, but some possibly interesting books in
there.

Is this going to be Spider-Girl or Spider-Woman? Because isn't there a
rule two heroes can't have the same name? If this is a Spider-Girl, it
doesn't look good for Mayday.

So basically Marvel does Batman?

Spectacular Spiderman?? He was an Avenger for like 2 issues.

As long as I can get these Digests in Oz I'll be a happy pappy.

LOL oh no. What's happened to Marvel of late?

Hmmmm... this screams of someone in Marketing going "New Mutants isn't
selling well because it doesn't have an X in the title, why don't we
called it New X-Men, because they are". I think a lot of people who
pick this up and not find the X-men in it will be ticked off.

I didn't even know they were doing an Invaders series.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Wow. They actually listened. I guess they heard how completely fricking

Hmm. Very mysterious, to me, at least. What's happening to _Spider-Girl_,
then, if she's coming "back"? Is it finally, actually cancelled?

 >VENOM v CARNAGE #1 - Four-issue mini. Written by Peter Milligan, so

Bleh. My two least favorite Marvel characters from the 90s, I think.

So, what? We've got Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, and New X-Men?
Personally, I have a fond attachment to "New Mutants."

Presumably because of the artist change, but not a good way to start.

It's rather amazing how badly they've dropped the ball on this one. Why
even start the book if you can't get it out on a regular basis?

 >THOR #80 and #81 - Michael Avon Oeming is the new writer.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'll miss Jurgens. Anybody know the
circumstances of his departure?

Isn't this Chuck Austen? _Invaders_ was always a niche title, even under
the loving care of Roy Thomas. I can't see it ever working under some
random hack writer.

As do I, but the Reloaded title has no connection whatsoever with the New
Mutants family of characters, so using that title would be misleading at
best.

The Reloaded title has more ties to Morrison's NXM (Scott, Emma, Dust,
children inducted to the school during the Morrison era) than it does with
the NM. Call it what it is. NXM is a perfectly good title for it.

Besides, the trademark on "New Mutants" has been renewed already by NMv2,
no need to keep the title in the headlights anymore for at least five
years.

As I understand it, NEW X-MEN isn't going to be an X-Men book - it's the
X-Men-in-training title, hence "new X-Men." The purpose of having the
subtitle on the solicitation for issue #1 was to make clear that it
wasn't a continuation of the existing NEW X-MEN in any sense.

Honestly, NEW X-MEN makes slightly more sense as a name for the book
than NEW MUTANTS.

 >I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'll miss Jurgens. Anybody know the
 >circumstances of his departure?

His big storyline is obviously coming to a climax, so I assume he's
simply finished the story he wants to tell and is moving on. He's been
on the title for something like six years now, and Marvel have allowed
the current storyline to run for around three years, so it's not like
they're cutting him off at the knees. After a run of that length, I
would assume he just fancies a change, in the absence of any evidence to
the contrary.

 >Isn't this Chuck Austen? _Invaders_ was always a niche title, even under

It's co-written by Chuck Austen and some guy whose name I can't
remember. Apparently it's set in the present day, so presumably it's an
attempt to copy the relative success DC have had with JSA. However,
there's an obvious difference - the JSA actually has a fanbase. Outside
of a very small core audience, nobody really cares much about the
Invaders. We're talking about a continuity implant that ran for 41
issues in the late 1970s.
