Hoping one of you Buk fans out there might be able to tell me the
original source for the following quote:
"Somebody at one of these places asked me: "What do you do? How do you
write, create?" You don't, I told them. You don't try. That's very
important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality.
You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It's like a bug
high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close
enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like it's looks,
you make a pet out of it."
Thanks much,

Great quote, and pretty accurate, for at least *some* of us poets, for
the endlessly and annoyingly asked question, "Where do you get your
ideas..?" about the best I can reply is "From out of my head."
Somehow it's hard to get across that all I need to do is sit down and
write, the words just come out, or not, as Bukowski explained.

Bukowski was a joke Bukowski played on an audience of Wills. Only
his audiences usually had the excuse of being stoned and/or drunk at
the time.

If the quote instructs, it's that one needn't feel self-important
because one is an "artist". That Bukowski added a footnote to the
discussion of what poetry can be (in form, substance, and a source of
real income) is undeniable. Others' defining poetry on Bukowski's terms
is where the joke lies -- imagine someone picking up where Shakespeare
left off.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: source of primary "don't try" quote |

The above quote is from a 1963 Buk-letter to a professor!
See "Livling on Luck" page 49 (in my version)
Linda, his wife, also said in an interview that "Don't try" was Buk's answer
when ppl asked what his philosophy was...
