Cover art needs to be adjusted for spine width _after_ you've selected
the printer and paper. Sixty pound papers vary from about 380 to 440
_pages_ per inch. (Pages per inch (ppi) is the usual way that spine
widths are given... 100 sheets is 200 pages. A printer will say that the
book spine will measure 100/440 (+ .02 for the thickness of the cover)
if the paper stock is 440 ppi.
When I design a cover, I usually start with a 400 ppi measure (in your
case 1/2 inch)... then the adjustment to the particular paper is usually
quite small.
If you use a printer in the Mid-west, you can use a special "high bulk"
55 lb paper designed specifically for books. (Glatfelter is one brand.)
These papers are 360 ppi. So, then your cover would be 200/360 or .55
inch + .02 (the cover) for a total of .57 inch thick. The special book
paper isn't available on the West coast and isn't usually used by
digital printers.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
