Gordon Van Gelder has an editorial in May's F&SF
that advocates putting the good doctor on a US stamp.
He mentions this website
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/4986/asimovstamp/

and said he posted a letter to fill out on
http://www.fsfmag.com/
but I didn't see it

IA on a stamp is certainly a good idea IMO. But every time I read "Mr.
Asimov", it indicates that the writer doesn't know his/her subject matter in
necessary detail.

Twice he [whoever did the geocities web site, not joe RemoveThis @jolomo.net]
did it.

Granted, I give credibility to Gordon Van Gelder's altruism in
this matter [from joe's post, reading F&SF {along with a lot of
other mags, SF and otherwise, and books} went by the boards after
a stealth heart attack/stroke a few years back], but there are a
*lot* of people/groups lately pushing their
friends/associates/members/whatever to write the USPS and ask for
so-and-so, prominent for doing miracles in his/her chosen field
of such-and-such, to be recognized by the issue of a stamp.
e.g., for the Marines, from which I retired some twenty-mumble
years ago, Chesty Puller [among others] has been the subject of
such a campaign for a while, noted by the presence of letters
every so often in Marine Corps Gazette and Leatherneck magazines.
I have come across at least a dozen other similar campaigns in
recent months from one group or another for one person or
another.

Maybe stamp collectors want to increase the raw material
selection for future generations to collect? Hmmm. Must hie
myself over to alt.conspiracy and tell them I've found another
one.

Why, because he didn't refer to him as Dr. Asimov? I see nothing wrong
with that. After all, Isaac was a Mr. too. And Asimov did not routinely
use the honorific himself. He knew that his importance was not measured
by a title prepended to his name.

At least the site author (or is that aurthor?) spelled both his first
name and his last name right each time. If such a stamp were issued, I
fully expect to see the first print run spell it "Issac Asimov" (or
perhaps Asminov?), and then to avoid another upside-down airplane
rarity, they would no doubt make sure that the misspelled version and
the corrected version were printed in equal numbers.

Rather than take the site author to task for referring to the Good
Doctor as a mister, I would hone in on a much more horrific statement.
Asimov wrote sci-fi? Egads! He wrote science fiction (with no apologies
to Forry Ackerman).

It was still not there when I checked at about 7:00 PM ET-US
prior to my post in this thread. It obviously was added sometime
after that.

BTW, I am sure it was an oversight that you didn't post the URL
link to the letter, so here it is:

Sorry, That was the wrong site. Here's the site to go to.

http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/depts/gvg0405.htm

for the letter about the stamp.

Which is pretty ironic when you think about it; with email, faxing, online
billpaying, preprinted shipping labels, etc. there are fewer reasons to need
stamps than there used to be.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
