Although Stephen Dedalus is semi-autobiographical in "Artist", the
character is expanded in Ulysses to represent, in the largest scope,
mankind's artistic side, whereas Bloom is our scientific aspect.
Of course, Joyce, in Ulysses and in Wake, is multi-level, and gives
many views of his characters, with their playing many "roles" -- a
fact especially true in Wake.
If you're interested in character development of Joycean characters in
Ulysses, I suggest you find a copy of "The Cast of Characters" by Paul
Schwaber. The author is not only a Joycean scholar but is also a
practicing psychoanalyst. He provides a psychiatric analytical view of
the characters in Ulysses. Despite the depth of the book and its
complex subject, it's quite readable.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
