Just started reading it and the first thing that springs to mind is
the comparrison of 'Perky Pat' etc..(used by the martian colonists as
a way of escapism and a reminder of life back on earth) to 'The Sims'
computer game phenom of todays earthbound people seeking escape from
THEIR mundane lives....

Some magazine (Spin?) ran an article on the things that you won't be
able to do in The Sims, including running a simulation. In other words,
the characters in The Sims don't play the The Sims game (or a simulation
of it, technically).

Don't go there man. Just don't go there. For there winds the path to
insanity.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm not familiar with The Sims, but the "Perky Pat" idea was originally based
on Barbie Dolls and their elaborate accessories, which which PKD was obliged to
supply his daughters. "The Days of Perky Pat," the original short story to
feature her, was about a post-apocalyptic society that preserved the memory of
the past by elaborate Barbie Doll games.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

probably a good idea -- things could get out of hand, as in "The
Thirteenth Floor" (http://www.imdb.com/Title?0139809)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

There's no need for the Sims to run a simulation--they think
that *you* are the simulation.
