I'm going to try and attend this: Stansky, Patai, Orville Schell, George
Packer. Anyone got any questions for them? (Rachel?) See

Drat, I only just read this having gotten back. Were you there? I'm the one
who asked the opening question about Eileen's psychology studies. Which
question was yours?

I'll try & summarize my notes shortly. Lots of good talk, some of which
might interest Rachel, I think. Biggest pleasant surprise was hearing that
George Packer of the New Yorker is a real fan's fan. A questioner suggested
Orwell had never really written an essay about "democratic socialism as I
understand it" (from "Why I Write"), and Packer pleasantly slamdunked him
with a quote from H to C.

Patai couldn't make it but sent two incisive paragraphs about how invoking
Orwell as authority for one's own political positions is a lazy substitute
for arguing on the merits.

More later,

Double drat. As soon as I posted that, I realized that I couldn't go
after all. Sigh. Looking forward to your notes.
