Well, here's the deal.
According to my Dad, sometime today or tomorrow (hoping for
today), Mom is coming off the respirator.
PRAISE GOD!
But wait! That's not all...
Over the 24 hours from last night to today, Mom's kidney's put
out almost a full liter of urine (okay...so did anyone EVER think
I'd be interested in how much my Mom pee'd in a single day?).
And this is even with dialysis running MEANING that, in addition
to what dialysis is getting out, Mom's kidney's our putting out
as well.
PRAISE GOD!
But WAIT!!! That's not all...
Mom is complaining. Yes, that's a GOOD thing. She's awake and
aware enough to actually communicate complaints about 1) back
pain, 2) skin irritation, 3) irritation from the respirator tube,
4) dry mouth from the respirator. So, she's complaining. She
CAN complain. She WANTS to complain.
PRAISE GOD!
But WAIT!!! That's not all...
Dad listened in on some doctor's conversations this morning and
the words "cautiously optimistic" were used. No, she's not fully
recovered yet... but everything is pointing that way. This after
the doctor said, upon her admission to Hershey, "This is about as
bad as I've ever seen pancreatitis" as well as doctor's at the
original hospital saying, "We've never seen a worse case."
PRAISE GOD!
As the title of this post says, we're not done yet... lots of
healing and recovery to come. But my MOMMY is getting BETTER!
Hooray!

Good for her! (and, obviously, a great relief for the rest of the family)
As for her complaints -- at the risk of being accused of being on-topic for
this newsgroup, you could always try the approach that Elspeth used to keep
the badly injured Darkwind's attention following the battle at the end of
_Winds of Fury_. Since your mother is at least prtly aware of what's going
on, perhaps some groaners (or whatever would make her laugh) would be
appropriate.
Be sure to tell her that the whole ABML community has been overjoyed to hear
that she's recovering.

Great. Are the chemistries improving too?

Medically speaking, 'bitching' is a good sign.

Yup. Amylase and lipamase numbers are down to normal ranges.
BUN and such are obviously coming down, too, with the dialysis.
Time will tell whether or not her kidneys will completely recover
but everything is looking good so far.
>Medically speaking, 'bitching' is a good sign.
hehe... Yeah. And Mom's fiesty. She doesn't complain much as a
rule, but she does NOT like being uncomfortable.

brain with:
>Great news, Tris! I'm looking forward to more to come.
And you've got it.
According to an IM conversation I had with my brother (who is in
Hershey today), Mom is completely off the respirator. Tube is
out and everything. She has an oxygen nose canula still for
extra oxygen support but she no longer needs assistance with
breathing.
Also, they have her blood pressure stablized that she's no longer
on vasoconstrictors.
AND they've changed the insulin from a continuous drip to the
longer-lasting stuff (closer to natural insulin) requiring
glucose checks only every 6-hours.
I'm having a hard time staying seated in my cubicle today I'm
SOOO excited.

Heh. Good point. But Mom is one of those ladies who
definitely likes her comfort. She doesn't normally complain but,
well, she will let ya know if she's not happy with something.
Ah, the memories of the house echoing with "Bob! Will you take
care of this please?"
>Good for your mom!
Not her doing. Honestly, with her recovery, none of it is her
doing. Hershey Medical told us she was the worse case of this
they had ever seen and Hershey has seen a LOT of cases...
something this bad usually ends up with a funeral. And Mom made
it through...
