Hi everyone, I know the quality of writing varies from author to author as
it does from book to book, but are there any characters that you felt were /
are particularly well written by any particular author in any particular
book(s)? For my part, I thing D. Duane did a fabulous job with the Romulans
in the Rhiannsu series of books. The Romulans didn't hold any particular
interest for me til I read her books in that series and couldn't put them
down. Thought they were fabulously written.
Love to hear about other characters you feel are particularly well explored.
Can be the familiar favorites, well known or not well known species
/characters.
cheers
Erica Brandon

Peter Morwood did a great job on "Rules of Engagement."

The Reeves-Stevenses also do a great job on illuminating the secondary
characters of Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov along with Kirk and Spock et al. They
also handle the DS9 crew with the same deftness (along with bringing real
science to them).

The writing crew of LA Graf did an excellent job in the DS9 book "Time's
Enemy," and the TOS book "Death Count" (especially Sulu and Chekov.)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you like the Trek stuff of the Reeves-Stevenses you should definitely
check out their other two books set in the present day "Quicksilver" and
"Icefire". They were rather prescient about terrorism considering they were
written before 9/11. I'm still waiting for another one of those sort of
books from them.

Two words:

PETER DAVID.

Etch them in stone.

Take them to the bank.

Read and enjoy. They are a seal of reading quality, be it Star Trek, movie
novelizations, King Arthur in contemporary America, Sir Appropos (negates
the "hero" in "anti-hero") in the ancient fantastical past, Simon (aka
"Psi-Man") in a polluted corrupt dictatorial 21st century America (written
back in the 80s so it's not a dig at either the current or previous
Presidential administration), or the adventures of a wolf bitten by a
werewolf in 1980s New York. David writes for long-time fans and for new
readers.

Two more words:

M'c'n'k'zy Calhoun

The purple-eyed Xenexian--who, as a teenager led his planet to rise up in a
bloody revolution (much said bloodletting at his hands) against their alien
taskmasters--is also known as "Mackenzie" to his human / non-Xenexian
friends (and enemies).

Lastly two more words:

NEW FRONTIER.

The NEW FRONTIER line of Star Trek books combines the best of The Original
Series and TNG-era Star Trek. Actions have consequences. Characters have
development, get promoted, transfer off-ship, grow old, die, get married,
have kids--kids who are "childish", without being saccharine sweet and cute
nor preposterously precocious.

-- Ken from Chicago

P.S. 'Mac' handles the famed Koyabashi Maru quite spectacularly in the
latest in the New Frontier novel, ST: NF: STONE AND ANVIL.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

They would make gripping movies, especially in light of 9/11. I discovered
the "Icefire" one because one of the most gripping earlier chapters was
printed in the end of one of the books they wrote 'with' Shatner.

It has the chapter with the NEST (Nuclear Emergency Strike Team, a real US
organization) strike team guy and his ex-girlfriend flying a 2-seat Harrier
off a British Harrier carrier to try to warn the world that a terrorist act
of detonating nuclear weapons on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica is sending
a 200 ft tall soliton tidal wave that will wipe out the entire Pacific Rim.
The image of the doomed British navy men standing on deck watching them go
knowing they are in the path of a massive tidal wave they can't out race is
one of the most chilling things I've ever read, especially when the sorts of
death tolls described in the story came true in a different way on 9/11...

If you like an edge of your seat story I promise you you won't regret
reading it.

Also The Lost Era: Serpents Among the Ruins is a great read. David R. George
does a superb job of creating actual 3D characters from minor bit parts we
saw in "Generations." Harriman, especially, is a convincing 20-year older
version of the uncertain new captain we saw in the movie.

Highly recomended.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Then you have got to read THE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER by Peter David.

Read it back when it was released. SATR references that one regarding
Harriman's relationship wth his father. SATR is a better book, IMHO, in that
the characters are more realistic than David's.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
